WHISKY AS MEDICINE

LARGE AMERICAN STOCK. . PENDING STATE PURCHASE, WASHINGTON, May 27. The largest liquor purchase since prohibition came into force is pending in the proposal of the United States Government to buy 2,000,000 gallons of old overproof whisky. Twenty million gallons are still in storage from former days, and at the normal rate of Government sale for medicinal purposes this will last for 10 years. Spirits for this purpose should be aged in the wood for six years, and the government is considering the question of opening a distillery to keep up the tsnppiy. The American Medical Association, at a meeting at Atlantic City; adopted a resolution declaring that alcohol was essential to the treatment of disease, and asking the Government to permit the prescribing of as much whisky or brandy as was deemed necessary. The present limit is a pint.
