TUB FARMERS’ UNION AND DAIRY CONTROL.

TO THE editor.

Sir, — In his letter to the Editor of 6th inst. Mr Leo says that he “was considerably surprised that, at the Farmers’ Conference, no opportunity was given to discuss the Dairy Control Board election.” In accordance with the usual custom, and after the business on the order paper had been disposed with, the chairman asked the meeting if there was any further business. Mr Lee was present as a delegate, and, if ho so desired had ample opportunity of having the matter discussed. The decision of the executive regarding the election appeared iu the newspaper in the morning, so that delegates might raise any objection at the annual conference. It is difficult to understand Mr Leo’s statement that a newiv-electcd member of last year's executive had stated that he would never again sit as a member of the executive owing to the clique that was operating there. The fact is that all last year’s members of the executive, with the exception of Mr John Clarke, accepted nomination for this year's executive. Many inquiries were received asking the union’s executive to give a lead as to winch candidate should receive the support of union members. Mr J. D. Hall, president of the North Canterbury Executive, and Mr. Peter Arnott, of the Southland Executive, who were present at the meeting, both stated that it was most desirable that the Otago Executive should give a lead. The following extract from the minutes will make the position clear;—“On the motion of Messrs I. D. lie vie and A. Craig, it was decided that, as the New Zealand Fanners’ Union favours the ward system of election, and supports the principle of co-operative marketing of primary products, this executive, on being requested by its members and the ’ North Canterbury Provincial Executive to give a lead, recommends producers and union members to support the candidature of Mr William Bryant. On the motion of Messrs A. Craig and C. F. Overton, the sectetary was instructed to have the minute, as above, published in the morning’s paper/’ ' I trust this makes the position quite clear, and I hope that any misunderstanding will be dispelled. I would reiterate Hie ‘act that the Farmers’ Union represents all branches of farming, and it is quite open to dairymen to serve both on their local executive and on their provincial executive.—l am. etc., Stuart P, Cameboh, b'ecertary N.Z.F.U. Dunedin, June 6.
