MR J. A HANAN AND PARLIA MENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The Hou. J. A. Hanan lias made it clear that for domestic reasons lie does not intend to seek re-election for Invercargill. This is a groat misfortune, foe it is certain that the electors whom ho has represented for a quarter of a century would without clouo> return him to the new House. Mora particularly is this unfortunate when the ann-doeiulistic parties are openly contemplating fusion, when a redistribution or portfolios is probable. In the National Government the Hon. Mr Hanan held (lie portfolio of Education, and during his tenure of that office, under the most trying circumstances, ho well and trul\ laid the' foundation of a system of education of 'he most enlightened advarced, and democratic kind. So highly was his work estimated by our late Prime Minister that it is reported that he was eulogised by that distinguished statesman as Now Zealand's greatest Minister of Education. . . This being so. it were a thousand pities that such ripe experience, forceful character and outstanding administrative ability should be lost to the dominion. Dunodin, I understand, is to be the home of Air Har.an, and it would be entirely in accordance with her traditions were she to find an electorate for the man who undoubtedly would make f-n ideal Minister of Education under a Elision Government. I have mooted this to a number of citizens, and have mot with most hearty enthusiasm. I do not know whether or not, such a proposal would be considered by Mr Hanan, hut. suggest that, a committee be formed and that he should be approached on the, subject.—l mu, etc., Head Master. Dunedin, Juno 4, 1025.
