DRAUGHTS MATCH.

TOWN v. COUNTRY. The annual draughts match between the town and country players took place last night in the Y.M.C.A. Forty-four players were paired, ami a keen contest resulted. The teams comprised a number of noted players, besides several now arrivals from the llomelknd, who proved a source of strength to the visitors. Mr Young, of Christchurch, a well-known contestant, in the New Zealand championship tournaments, also rendered the country effective aid, scoring two to one against the 85-ycar-oid vejteran, J. MTvinnon. R. Betting, who lives in both town and country, elected to support the country team, and J. A. Boreham, many times champion of Now Zealand, is now also a country representative. The country team, therefore, began play with great confidence in their ability to"‘scoro a win this year, and their confidence proved to be well founded. After over two hours’ play the result was announced as follows: —Country, 29; iown, 1.6; drawn, 17. . . The following table gives the pairing and individual scores: —

Mr J. Abemethy {town captain) congratulated the visitors on their excellent score, and hoped the victory would result in a record contest in Exhibition year. Ho could promise, on behalf of the city players, that next year's gathering would bo thoroughly organised. He called for three cheers for the winners. Mr James Stevenson (captain of the Country team) suitably responded, and thanked the Town players for the entertainment provided. The match had been a very pleasant one, and afforded an opportunity for meeting cld friends and opponents over tho board. Mr 0. Rendall moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr F. Ililliker for his' work as secretary for these annual gatherings: and on the motion of Mr Fleming a vote of thanks and appreciation was accorded to Mr J. Abemethy, draughts editor of the Otago Witness, for his efforts in support of the game. A round of applause greeted the mention of two notable absentees—Messrs A. Murdoch (Waitahuna) and R. Caldow (Dunedin), who had captained (heir respective teams for many years past.
