Th* Hon. C. E. Statha.m, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will leave tor Wellington to-morrow. Mr Alex. Begg and Mr 1. Ritchie left Dunedin on Saturday morning on a business visit to Wellington. Mr J. M. A. Senior-sergeant Isaac Mathieson has received advice of his transfer to Ashburton. On Thursday the remains of the late Mr Thomas Craig, of East Taieri, wore laid to rest, in the local cemetery. A largo company of friends met to show their lust tribute of respect to the deceased gentleman. Mr Craig arrived in New Zealand in 1864 in the ship Resolute, and has been in East Taieri ever since. lie was the senior elder of the East Taieri congregation, and bad held this office for very many years. No man in the district commanded more respect. In connection with the funeral a service was conducted in the East Taieri Church by the Rev. D. M ‘Cosh, after which his brother office-bearers carried his remains to the cemetery. Mrs Craig predeceased her husband some months ago. Three sons and two daughters survive their parents. The late Mr Craig was of a retiring disposition, and beyond being an energetic member—in past years—of the Taieri Agricultural Society, did not trouble public affairs to any great extent. As a result of the ballot taken recently the following officials of the Federated Seamen’s Union have been elected for the ensiling year: —Wellington—President, Mr C. B. Eitt.es; vice-president, Mr K. Brown; treasurer, Mr D. Currie; secretary and general secretary, Mr W. T. Young; assist. secretary. Mr F. C. Howell ; councillors — Messrs 'C. B. Cities- (960), T.
