BANDS’ RECITAL.

Thor© was a. very large gathering of the public at Logan Park yesterday afternoon when the three Dunedin, bands which aro taking part in the contest at Auckland gave a recital at the No. 1 court of the New Zealand and'South Seas Exhibition buildings. Ihe bands, which gave the contest selections, were in excellent form, but the heat was somewhat severe on the players. The plan was originated by Mr Scott Cohille and the directors of the company, who were anxious to assist the bands to take part m the contest and the result was that each band benefited by tho sum of £24. The bands are also indebted to the Messrs Fletcher and Love who made a handsome donation The Mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley) made a brief speech, and extended to the bandsmen every good wish for their success at Auckland. Ihe programme was an excellent one, the Kaikorai Band leading off with the contest march, “Jack o’ Lantern ” which was followed by “Eroica.” the first test selection. The band concluded with its choice in the hymn test. “Nearer My God, To Thee.’’ 'The St. Kilda Band then took possession of the stand, and opened with a. very stirring march with a fine niiJitarv swing about it. Then they rendered the test selection “On the Cornish (.oast, which showed them to be a baud possessed of a massive tone. The St. Kildn bandsmen also received loud applause and they concluded with their choice in the hymn test. “Fierce Raged the Tempest/’ The Third Artillery Band then rendered their contest march, “British Legion,” in fine stvle, and then plaved the test selection “Wildshufz,” which was rendered in first-class style. The collection taken no in the streets on Friday realised £173 16s 7d.
