SPORTING.

DUNEDIN OUP MEETING. BED WINK WINS HAZLETT , MEMORIAL. Tie Dtmedih Jockey Club concluded its most historic fixture in fine weather, which, in feet, was at times oppressively warm. The track presented an even more bumt-up appearance than on the first day, and the firm going and absence of wind materially assisted towards fast gallops. A track record was established in the principal handicap event. There was an excellent attendance and the card provided some very interesting sport and close finishes. The handicapper is usually held responsible for close finishes, and on this score Mr N. B. Lusk is to ‘be’ congratulated. One may disagree with his figures at times, but thlre is jet to bo found a completely satisfactory weight

adjuster,?and on the whole Mr Lusk keeps on showing improved work. Mr MTvor did excellent work at the barrier right through the piece, with the exception of the despatch in the Waihola Handicap. No blame oould bo meted out because Cornflower got badly ajvay, but Bonnie Lake did not seem to get a fair chance. Taken all round it was the best starting seen at Wingatui since Mr MTvor took charge. Several narrow margins had to be decided by Mr R. H. Aldworth, and he gave prompt and acceptable decisions on both days. The machinery of the nieeting worked smoothly under the aupervision of Mr H, L. James, and the honorary officials lent valuable aid to the general .success. The running throughout left very little open to question, and although the fields might have been larger on the second day and so brought in bettor returns to the club, from a sporting point of view it was one of the best meetings

ever held on the course. Speaking generally, it- may be said that the result of • the meeting should lend considerable assistance towards popularising the Wingatui race meetings. Camel Amble was elected favourite for the Owhiro Hurdles, which proved a chapter of accidents, as most of the jumps deleted something from the field. Red Admiral crashed through the stand hurdle, and Londonderry lipped out at the next. Soldier’s Pride was'" , fn charge when he came down at the six-furlong post. Frenchman then joined Camel Amble in the lead, and they were closely attended by Cairnmuir, whilst Raconteur was running a long Way' in . the rear. Camel Amble and Frenchman went at the : penultimate flight of hurdles tof ether, but the former came down and left rendhman to score a comfortable win. Although" the ground was very hard, none of the unshipped riders was hurt. It maj' be said in passing that in the summer months, when the going is invariably hard. ~ hurdle races should be dropped in favour of high-weight handicaps. The coupled pair Circulation and Overhaul: were' made a strong order for the Hopeful Handicap. They got away from a fair line, but Gay Flower dwelt at the post. John Bradbury, Quiokform, and Circulation were "racing in company up the rise, with Centrepiece running in behind them. Once fairly in line for home, Centrepiece came along, and racing past the trio in" front won comfortably by three lengths. Heads 'divided the next three, with John Bradbury just missing a place. The winner is the first of his sire’s stock to win. He was got by The Ace from Equipment, by Mar-tian—To-morrow, by Bill o’ Portland. John Bradbury, a well-grown youngster by Paper Money from Ena, ran a good race for a green performer, and if his rider had taken the liberty of giving him a couple of cracks down, tile running he might have been

second. : Jubilance was made favourite for the Handicap, but she seemed to get Into all the trouble that was going during * the race. When the field had travelled a furlong Apache and Barmaid carried on the running from Homan Archer. Inside the distance Apache had Barmaid’s measurer-and came on to win by half a • length from Barmaid, who beat Jubilance by a short length. Jubilance ,came on-well ;when” stirred up In the run home. Fresco Was finishing on at the end, but his effort 1 Came too late to reach a place. Winkle’s Best was made a slightly better favourite than Geranial in the Flying Handicap, but both were beaten by Eaton Bells, ; They got away from a good line, ■ from-which Dancing Days and Eaton Bells sooiit singled themselves out, and led Winkle’s Best to the straight, with Geranial racing handy. Eaton Bells drew out when they were approaching the distance. Winkle’s Best then challenged and looked a winner, but he shirked the task, and fcsnt over to the rails instead of coming straight on. Eaton Bells finally stalled him off and won by half a length.

They: were well clear of Geranial, who was followed by Monoxide. The D.J.C. Handicap was a really good ■betting race, only half a sovereign dividing favouritism between Deucalion and 1/istemlng: Post, whilst Ravenna went out a good third choice. Listening Post went down a bit short in his preliminary, but punters ignored the drawback, and it was a toss of a coin as to what would take supremacy it the betting. Mountain Lion set the way at a solid pace with the others always close up and Deucalion waiting at the tail of the field. Mountain Lion was sltH in command as they straightened for home, but at the distance Deucalion was oh terms, and looked a sure winner. He, iowever, finally had to be ridden light out to beat Mountain I.ion by half a length'; The others were out of it at the ' business end. They put up a track record, but tbo much stress should not be laid on the fact as the track and atmospheric conwere highly favourable to a horse goingf.weli against the watch. Clontarf was made a strong order for the Waihola Handicap, and apart from Sweeti Melody and Apple Lighten anything >vas Showing a fair price. Bonnie Lake and Cornflower were hopelessly .left. CU-u-

tarf and Sweet Melody led the. way from Apple:' Dighton and a well-spread field. Applcfc'Pighton came along in the straight and vVon by three lengths from Rapier, who finished well and beat Clontnrf neaily two lengths and Sweet Melody. On ’handicap form Loughrea had about 2111) tie bast of the figures, with Red Wink In thef Haziett Memorial, and Sun Up did ‘ jiot seem entitled to start so far as a paper bhance'was concerned. That was ihe view as th^ 1 field went to the post, but rumours Went abroad that Loughrca had not been doing, too well, and then an inclination arose:.”to twist on tc Red Wink. Sun Up made .play at a solid pace, and turned into the sought a coupic of lengths in front of Louclpfea, who was a length in front of Red jWink. Loughrea was first to be caliedvupon to make his run, and got to Sun IJp. but Red Wink finishing stronger than the others came with a well sustainedj effort, and bent Loughrea a short head,'.(Whilst Sun Up struggling on well defied all ideas of handicapping by finishing a head away. It was an interesting race, and goes to show that a very small field can sometimes supply a very fine race even though the figures. suggest an easy victory. ' Sartist was made a strong fancy for ihe Abbotsford Welter, but his pilot rode a rather confident race, and when he finally challenged All British the latter lasted long enough to win by a narrow margin of about a head. Gay Juliet, who had a bad passage, and was last three furlongs from home, came with a fast run. and finished a good third. It seemed as if Sartist or Gay Julie*- should have pot the money. The totalisaior turnover for the day was £33,703, as. against £31,855 for the second .day last year The total for the meeting ■was £05,020 10a, ns compared with £00,301 ids for the autumn meeting o" 1921.
