SMALLPOX ON SUSSEX.

THE "VESSEL QUARANTINED. PRONOUNCED FREE FROM INFECTION, (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 7. When tho Sussex, which arrived at And land yesterday, was at Singapore a case of smallpox was discovered on board shortly before the vessel was about to sail. The patient (an Indian seaman) was taken ashore and the vessel thoroughly fumigated. The Sussex arrived on December 27 at Thursday Island, where the pilot went on and piloted her through Torres Straits. As the quarantine period from the time the Sussex left Singapore had not expired when the vessel arrived ail Cape Moreton, the pilot was unable to land. He came on to Auckland, and is returning to Australia by tho Makura, which left Auckland for Sydney yesterdays During the voyage of the Sussex to this part tho crew were under tho observation, of the ship’s surgeon, who was able to pronounce tho ship free from any infectious complaint.
