ESSAY COMPETITIONS.
COACHING PUPILS OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS. At tho meeting of tho Education Board yesterday morning a letter was received from the Committee of Management of the Educational Institute expressing appreciation of the board’s attitude throughout the year in steadfastly refusing various renuosts for additional essay competitions in tne public schools. Tho letter was noted. The Committee of Management also forwarded two resolutions regarding scholarships, with the request that they be adopted in connection with the Otago schools: —(a) That there shall be no coaching or correction of work with the pupils for scholarships outside of school hours, (b) That no syllablus subjects shall bo omitted from the regulation time-table course for the puupose of concentrating oln scholarship work. As regards resolution (a) Mr Graham said he was not in favour of it. He thought if a teacher took pride in his work and his pupils he should bo encouraged. Tho Chairman (Mr Wallace) : We will have nothing to do with this kind of thing. He quite agreed wth the remarks made by Mr Graham. Other members said they would not takj any action in the matter. It was decided that the board disagree with tho object of the resolution. As regards clause (b) this also Tailed to meet the support of the board. It was agreed simply to receive it.
