Mr J. Garrard, shipping manager of Messrs Kinsey and Co., Jjyttelton, went north yesterday morning. Mr J. Sutherland Ross and Mrs Ross left for Auckland yesterday morning. Mr W. D. Smith (assistant superintendent of the Union Steam Ship -mpany) was a passenger for the north by the express yesterday.

Mr Andrew Cairuthers, of Ngapuna, Otago Central, was a passenger by yesterday’s express for the north, where he will judge Clydesdales at the Ellesmere and Timaru shows. Mr W. J. Morrell, rector of the iff,a.go Boys’ Hitrh School, and Mr E. J Smith, president of the Old Boys’ Association, left yesterday for Christchurch, where they will attend the reunion of old boys of the school residing in North Canterbury. Mr W. G. Smith, of the Union Steam Ship Company’s head office, who represented the snipping companies in the recent waterside workers’ dispute, heard before the Arbitration Court, was a passenger by yesterday’s express for the north. Captain Webb, wharf superintendent for the Union Company at Wellington, Captain Munro, chief wharfinger for the Wellington Harbour Board, Captain Whyte, of Auckland. Mr W. Bennett, secretary of the Wharf Labourers’ Employment Association, and Mr J. Garrard, manager for Messrs Kinsey and Co., at Lyttelton, were also passengers by the same train.

The death occurred at his residence, St. Leonards, yesterday evening of Mr Gilbert Buchanan, for many years printer of the Evening Star. Mr Buchanan, who was 73 years of age, was one of the original pupils of the Part School, ond an early pupil at the Otago Boys High School. Ho served his apprenticeship at the Star office, and, when a comparatively young man, became printer, which position he occupied for practically 4-0 years, and his period of service with the Evening Star Company extended over a period of about 55 years. Mr Buchanan enjoyed good health until about 18 months ago. He lived a retired life, and did not tate any active interest in public affairs. He is survived by a widow and three sons and two daughters. At Government House, Wellington, yesterday morning (says a Wellington Press Association message), in the presence of Sir Francis Bell, Sir Robert Stout, Mr Justice Adams, and Mr Justice MacGregor, and Mr Skerrett, K.C.. the GovernorGeneral presented to Sir William Sim letters patent of knighthood consequent upon his elevation to the dignity of Knight Bachelor. It had been his Excellency’s intention to make the presentation at the investiture at Government House to-morrow evening, but the earlier ceremony .was arranged owing to the necessity of Sir William Sim’s departure for Dunedin to-day.
