SOUTHLAND DEFEATS OTAGO. A representative ladies' hockey match played on the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon between Otago and Southland drew a fair attendance, and resulted in Southland, the better team, winning by two goals to one. The more credit is due to the winners because of the fact that the team has been on tour for over a week, and nt. times throughout the game showed evident signs of the strenuous time it. had had. The visitors' forwards won the day. and outclassed the homo team in every direction, the latter being saved from a more decisive defeat through the efficiency c.f the Kicks. Until lhr> second spell matters were about even, but after that the visitors siiowed splendid form, and were unlucky in not adding to their total. The teams were as follows: Southland.—Goalkeeper- Miss T>. Hawk; full-backs. Misses M. Horner and R. Burt; halves—Misses R. Geddes, O. Bell, and M. Watson; forwards —Misses M. Davis. H. Ashley, M. M'Donald, E. Malvern, and W. Clark. Otago.—Goalkeeepr, Miss J. Black: fullbacks—Misses M. Thomson and A. Foley; Inlves—Misses P. Guest. D. Coghill, and A. Smith ; forwards —Misses P. Lawson. K. Ballantyne, L. Guest, L. Spittle, and J. Hanlin. Southland set up the attack, and good play by Miss Chirk took play to Otago's twenty-five. A good passing rush was started by Miss Geddes, but it was intercepted, and play hung fire in the circle. Then Miss M'Donald, with a well-directed hit. sent a fast ball to the net, but Miss Black, in goal, averted a score in a decisive manner In a succeeding rush a shot by Miss Ashley forced Otago to give a corner, from which, however, no result come. Matters changed hero, and Miss Lawson carried the "tall to Southland's twenty-five, but a good save was effected by Miss Horner. Otago attacked again, and Miss Lawson brought the IvII im on the left wing, and passed to Miss L Guest, who shot a goal. Southland 1. Otago 1. Half-time was called with tho game even. From the bully-off Southland set things moving, and a rush by Misses Ashiev and Davis took nlav to Otago's twentyfive, where Miss Malvern had an unsuccessful shot !-t goal. In the next few minutes Miss M'Donald shot at goal. l-"t Miss BW'k was reidv, and made a bciutiful save. Play ranged from end to end of the fi eld. and back again, with Southland holding the advantage, until Miss Hanlin carried the ball downfield and relieved a dangerous position.
