Ministerial. The Hon. G. J. Anderson, Minister of Labour and Marine, is expected to arrive from the north to-night on private business. He will return about the middle of the week. Mr H.. J. Hankinson left for Wellington by Saturday morning’s train. Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., arrived from the north by the express train on Saturday. The Hon. Robert Scott and the Hon. D. T. Fleming were passengers by tram for the north on Saturday. Mr G. W. Wyles, assistant Government electrical engineer, left by the express bn. Saturday for Wellington. Mr Ernest Winsloe George, who is employed in the office of the city engineer, Dunedin, has been advised _ that he has passed the preliminary examination of the Institute of Civil Engineers. Mr H. B. West, the local traffic manager, was a passenger for Christchurch by Saturday’s express. The Rev. Howard Elliott, who has been on a lecturing tour in the south, went north by Saturday morning’s express. Miss Lucy R. Willett has been appointed assistant teacher (infant ward) at the Papakaio School. Mr Frederick Parker, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Dunedin since January, 1916, will retire from the bonk on October 31 on superannuation, after over 48 years’ service. Mr A. Munro will leave by the north express this morning en route for Wellington, where he will attend a conference of dominion .master tailors, when the apprentice question will be discussed. Mrs J. K. Maofie is suffering from indisposition and is unlikely to be able to attend to her public duties for a little while. At the Wellington competitions Miss Madge Yates, of Dunedin, was placed first in the Girls’ Recitation in Character (12-16), and Miss Anita Winkle, also of Dunedin, gained first place in the Ladies’ Recital with accompaniment. Lieutenant-colonel Pilkington has been appointed Quartermaster-general in succession to Lieutenant-colonel Avery (reports a Press Association message), and Major Puttiok has been appointed Assistant Quartermastergeneral. Major King has been appointed Director of the Ordnance Service. A Wellington Press Association message reporta that Mr Walter N-ash, -secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, has been chosen to contest the Hutt seat at the next general election in the interests of Labour. Mr W. M. Luke. Christchurch agent for the Canadian .Government Merchant Marine (Ltd.) and Canadian National Railways has received notification of his appointment as general travelling representative for New Zealand. He undertakes his new duties immediately. Mr H. L. Penny, accountant, of the Christchurch branch, succeeds Mr Luka as agent, and Mr J. Sullivan succeeds Mr Penny as accountant. Mr E. J. Gravostock arrived from the north on Saturday to confer with the Musio Committee of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition respecting attractions for the Exhibition for which he is to arrange on a visit to Great Britain now about to be made by him. Mr N- K. Dallas, orchard instructor, has been advised of his transference to Dunedin as first grade orchard instructor, in charge of Otago and Southland district. Mr Dallas has been stationed at Christchurch for the past five years, with intervals of relieving duty at Nelson and Dunedin. He takes up his new duties in the middle of next month.
