ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
GELIGNITE EXPLODES PREMATURELY. MAN LOSES A HAND. (Per United Press Association.) TE AWAMUTU, September 6. William Owens, farm manager at Hairini, in endeavouring to frighten dogs by exploding a plug of gelignite with a detonator, was injured owing to a premature explosion. He was taken to Waikato Hospital, where his hand had to bo amputated at the wrist. A SEAMAN DROWNED. (Per United Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, September 6. Harry Darling, aged 45, a deck hand on the steamer Aotea, was drowned at the Ruawai wharf this morning. Deceased jumped on to a scow alongside the wharf to tie the boat up, when he missed his footing and fell in the water. The tide was at half-flood and was running strongly The mate of the Aotea saw the accident, and when a boat which was launched from the Aotea with all speed reached the spot where Darling was last seen he had disappeared. It was a very dark morning, and although the boat cruised round for some time there was no trace of the man. Deceased had only been on the ship a fortnight. He is believed to have formerly belonged to Whangarei DEATH FROM GAS POISONING. At the inquest on Emily Blanche Flott, a widow, who ■ was found dead at her residence in Balmoral road, the coroner returned a verdict that death was due to gas poisoning, self-administered, while in a depressed condition. A son ot deceased founa her dead on the floor, covered wth a rug, the gas tube, connected with a gas jet, being in her mouth. CYCLING FATALITY. Albert Edward Hollway, who was knocked down in Grey street by a boy cyclist yesterday, died in hospital late last night. He never regained consciousness. Deceased was formerly employed by Mason, Struthers, Christchurch. Ho leaves a widow and three children.
