OIL WORKS AT WELLINGTON.
A £300,000 - (From Opr Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September S Tht. British Imperial Oil - Company Loi New Zealand is establishing extensive storage tanks and plant near the 1 Miramar wharf, on the Wellington harboar front, 'mere is to bo laid a pipe line which will convey bulk oil from the new Wharf- to be halt to the big works now being erected on the Miramar flat, some distance up from - the Union Company’s crude oil storiw ■ tanks. One-way traffic only will bo Tithe ! rule in these pipes, for the main work;’ to be carried out in the new plant, which, , with storage ‘ tanks, will cover the bestpart of 20 acres, will bo the preparation for and the tinning or barrelling of benzine, motor spirits, kerosene, and other.:; power and. lubricating oils. The, Union Company’s tanks are storage tanks for fuel oil and heavy crude oil, and the shorter pipe line which leads from the Minunara wharf to those tanks serves a double purpose of carrying bulk oil to the tanks from the tankers and later feeding- it ont to* the oil burning boats or oil hulks., ' Oils which are. pumped up from the-nose-wharf to the Imperial Company’s new works, however, will be carted out' in tins, barrels, etc. < A capital expenditure of neatly £300,000 will be involved in these works, and about 300 men will be permanently employed in the tin making, case making, etc. When the industry gets under way practically everything but the oils themselves will m manufactured locally, the materials being ! imported in bulk and landed at the new ; wharf. The cases, will oome out cut to size, but not made up from the opmpaay’s own forests overseas, * and roll be slammed into case shape in a special plant .in th* time an average handy man would take in sorting out the nans he would start with. Wellington will become the central point of the oil receiving and distributing trade in the dominion. ,
