AGRICULTURAL COLLEGES.
ONE IN EACH ISLAND. _ -V MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. (From Orm Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September 5. The question of education in agriculture was discussed when the Estimates of the ; Agricultural Department were before* -the . i House to-day, and the Hon. Mr NoswortUy (Minister of Agriculture) took an early Op- ■ portunity of stating bis ideas on the suh> , jeot. He said that a good deal had been •* done in the matter of providing agricultural education, and a considerable sum of money had been spent with a view to giving scientific agricultural education J through farm schools, winter schools, '(i and so on. This matter of agricul- j tural colleges had not yet coma before Cabinet, bat as soon as Cabinet | got gome of the heavy work out of the way ; it would bo discussed to see" what arrange || ment could be come to. He was of ornate* that one agricultural college would fe sufficient for a start in, the North Island, but where it was going' to be be was not prepared to say at present. Instead of * establishing another agricultural college in the South Island he thought it wou!d_ bo advisable from a financial point of via*, and in recognition of what bad been dons at Lincoln College, that the Government ■ should step in. A mutual arrangement with Lincoln College would strengthen, it and bring it up to a standard equal to , what was proposed in the North Island.* at; Respecting the Howar estate, tbe people jjj of Hawke’s Bay had approached Him some ii 18 months ago, and he had advised them to work the farm up to its limit wrth ;a view to accumulating all the funds jte-!ri-sible for the establishment of an agnotlJ- 1 > tural college. He had not felt like takhdif away from Hawke’* Bay the money tb*t had been left by a Hawke’s Bay man for agricultural education, but tbe money left had been a long way from sufficient jti . connection with tbo establishment of u agricultural college. > - i
