HOCKEY.

LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. (Pee United Press Association.) NELSON, September 5. The ladies’ hockey tournament was continued this afternoon, four games being played. A change in the weather conditions set in at an early hour this morning, showers falling until midday, when it cleared and the matches were got off in fine weather. The ground was on the slippery side, but the rain had the effect of taking off the hardness which has been responsible for a number of casualties. In section A Marlborough had no chance against Wairarapa, but in the B. section better hookey was shown, Hawke's Bay were never extended against Buffer, but both the Southland v. Auckland and Ruahine (Dannevirke) v. Manawatu matches were fast and exciting contests. The results make it almost certain that Ruahine and Southland have to play off for the section winner, as Southland should have no difficulty in disposing of Manawatu on Monday. The play ’in the Southland v. Auckland game was marked by very fine work. The south forwards were more than a match for their opponents, who were also .up against a very solid half line. The first spell ended 1 all, and on resuming Southland rushed play to the circle and gained the lead. In the latter half of the spell Auckland worked better together and just missed a chance of scoring once or twice. The result was put beyond doubt by Southland getting a third goal within 10 minutes’ time. Manawatu held off the strong Ruahine attacks in the first spell and also had several chances of netting Quick, open play characterised the game, in which Ruahine were the better in the circle and passed with more judgment. The first half was an>'" body’s game. Well on in the second, half Ruahine broke down a stubborn defence and netted twice. The following are the results of to-day s games: A Section,—Wairarapa 10 beat Marlborough nil. , . , B Section.—Hawke’s Bay 7 beat Buffer 2. Ruahine 3 beat Manawatu ml.

Southland 3 beat Auckland 1. A ball was held last night in honour or the visiting players and was very largely attended.
