A DRUNKEN DRIVER.
THE MAGISTRATE’S WARNING. GAOL IN FUTURE. (Per United Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, September 5. In the Magistrate’s Court Cornelius MacCartliy, a butcher, was fined £lO and costs for being drunk while in charge of a motor car. Defendant’s solicitor pleaded that it was the man’s first offence, and he asked the magistrate to inflict a fine. Mis Worship said ho had taken into consideration defendant’s previous good character, but a £lO fine was inadequate in cases of this kind. Magistrates all over the dominion wore now imprisoning without the option of a fine, and in future cases Imprisonment would be the punishment without respect to person or persons. He hoped that the present case, which was the first of its kind in the district, would prove a warning.
