GENERAL NEWS.

A pleasant function took place in the form of a farewell to the staff of Cumings Stores (Ltd.) t>n Tuesday evening last at the residence of Mrs Cuming, sen., of Royal terrace. The function took the form of a dinner, followed by a social evening. The large dining room was gaily decorated, and-a large number of employees sat down to a sumptuous ( repast. The assistant manager (Mr J. Gawn), in wishing Mrs Cuming, sen., long life and happiness and Mr Cuming prosperity in years to come, voiced his own and the staff’s regret that they were parting from a firm in which such happy relations existed. Miss Romeril heartily supported everything said by Mr Gawn. Mr F. Z. Moore, who had been associated with the Cumings for the last 27 years, remarked on the happy thought of Mrs Cuming, sen., and Mr Cuming in giving a function of this sort, and said it only bore out what ho knew in his legal capacity as solicitor for the firm of the happy relations existing between the employers and the staff. Mr Charles Cuming responded on .behalf of his mother and himself, and, in. doing so, expressed regret on the disbanding of a picked and loyal staff with whom it had been at all times a pleasure to work.

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Association was held on Thursday afternoon. Mrs T. K. Sidey (president) being absent in Wellington, Miss Alexander was in the chair. It was reported that the Kaikorai Mothers’ Club’s bazaar on August 21 realised the gratifying sum of £75 14-s sd, and that the R. S. Reynolds’ Mothers on the same evening held a small “bring and buy” sale, which brought £9 towards the general expenses for upkeep. Other reports were that the Kelsey Yaralla Kindergarten had boen thoroughly cleaned, that Messrs 0. and W. Hayward were restaining the large floor, and that Mr J. J. Clark was having a fence erected along the north frontage, that Dr Hogg had presented a first aid outfit, which would m most useful in the kindergarten, and that new building at Caversham was being much appreciated, and that Mr Taunook was having the gerden put in order, and that the St. Kilda Mothers’ Club raised £ll at their bazaar. Miss Dutton reported Miss Maxwell had promised to assist with the students’ theory examination. The schools are at present closed for the holidays. Two students took their practical teats before the holidays, being in charge of the kindergarten for a fortnight. The rest of the final year students will nave their tests when kindergartens reopen on the 16th inst. The collector handed in £l6 15s in annual subscriptions. The annual social and dance tenderecd to the employees of the Phcenix Company and their friends by the management was held in the Early Settlors’ Hall on Friday last, over 400 attending. In welcoming those present Mr Alexander referred to the friendly relations existing between the management and the employees which enabled these functions to take place, and congratulated the committee which had carried out the arrangements. The tastefully decorated tables were greatly admired, and the catering was of a high standard. Several competitions were held during the evening, and vocal items were contributed bv Mrs G. K. Simkin. Miss Dickson, Mr J. Adams, and Mr S. Taylor. Mr A. Nelson gave a mouth organ solo, and Mr Parnell a pianoforte sol-. Miss D. Beck was an efficient accompanist, and the music hv the Sunshine Players added greatly to the enjoyment of the evening.

A.D. Bro. Hudson nrosided over the usual meeting of the Royal Oak Lodge, held on Monday. D.P. Bro. Workman was present officially, while P.A. Bro. Clarke, Pride of Mornington. and Bro. Sharp, Acorn Lodge, were welcome visitors. Tho officers of the lodge were appointed to draw up the syllabus for the coming year. Two candidates were presented and dulv initiated info the mysteries of Dmidism. Tho toasts being honoured, the lodge adjourned for the purpose of carrying out a progressive euchre tournament, Bro. Churchill donating a trophy. After a very enjoyable evening Rrn, Sparrow wa.s declared the winner. D.P. Bro. Workman presented the winner with the trophy, and supper concluded a very jjloasant evening.
