MYSTERIOUS DISEASE

EPIDEMIC IN JAPAN. HICK MORTALITY RATE. Frees Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. TOKIO, August 25. Much alarm is being caused by a mysterious epidemic in ( the middle west districts. Two thousand five hundred cases, 900 resulting in death, have been reported in the past fortnight. In some districts the percentage of deaths reached 70. The epidemic is apparently a form of sleeping sickness. The victims, who are mostly elderly, fall into a doze from which' it is impossible to awaken them, and they die. The bacteriologists so lar have been unable to trace the source of the disease, but it is believed to be a form of spinal meningitis. Another theory is that the disease is a form of brain fever, which spread all over the world a quarter of a century ago, and is closely connected with ordinary brain fever. — Sydney Sun Cable.
