JOHN MAGLASHAN TOURNAMENT, An interested audience of old mid present boys, parents, and friends gathered lit John JPGliasbau College on Saturday evening to witness the semi-linals and iinals of the hexing tournament. The school was fortunate in having Mr F. .1. Campbell (president of the New Zealand Uuxtiik Council) to act ns referee, and a thoroughly interesting series of bouts was witue.ssed. In the semi-finals of the College Championship M'Gregor, (major) and Creenslade (major) were successful against Gilkisou (major) and Sutherland respectively, both bouts being very fast. An excellent final bout resulted in a narrow victory for M'Gregor. The Fly-weight Championship also provided some excellent boxing, the semifinalists being Langford ana M'Gregor (minor), Begg (minor) and Armstrong. I. and Armstrong met in the final, the greater height and weight. of the former giving him (he victory. Armstrong put up a game fight against odds. .Probably the most enjoyable event of Iho evening was the bout between the two Juniors under live stone. Voung (minor) and Tibbitts. They gave an extraordinarily line display, which drew from the andieoee prolonged applause, and which Mr Campbell described as a wonderful exhibition. Thu final of the Intermediates was won by I’nnkine, who boxed very fast and cleverly in the final against Wilson, a much heavier hoy. Wilson gave a very plucky display, but the pace of the former was too much for him. Extra bunts were; -Young v. MTvenzie and C. I’.egg v. Melville. Young and Begg securing the verdicts. At the close of the championship final, which ended the tournament, Mr Campbell congratulated the school on its excellent boxing, paying a special tribute to the instructor, Mr A. W. Macdonald. He awarded the gold medal for the most scientific boxing, presented by Mr J. M. Fraser, to Ureenslade (major). The Principal, in moving a cordial vote of thanks to Messrs Campbell and Macdonald, said the College was very fortunate in its instructor, who had produced some remarkable results in a very short time.
