REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES CANTERBURY DEFEATS OTAGO. (From Our Special Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. Tho Canterbury-Otago representative match was played on Lancaster Park under perfect weather conditions. Messrs Bellamy and Down acted ns referees. The game commenced by tho local team attacking, but tho defence of Ireland and Gardiner drove them back several times. Tho Otago forwards secured, but Hay saved and cleared to H. 8011, who shot, but Patterson ■ saved nicely. The local forwards made determined rushes, many of which were broken by the Otago half line, Gurr being specially conspicuous. Eventually S. Bell got posession and scored for Canterbury. Tho play for the rest of tho spell was very even, and it was anybody’s game. Tho half-time scores were; Canterbury 1, Otago Nil. In the second spoil Olago attacked, keeping Soper and Hay very busy, but the visitors could not iinish off their efforts. Mayston missing several shots narrowly. Further goals wore scored by II Bell, W. Bell, and Sherriffs for Canterbury. Gurr, Leonard, and Butler were superior to tho Canterbury half line, all playing good hockey. Woodfiolcl and Duncan got possession, tho latter sending in a nice goal for Otago. Tho same player was unfortunate later, being tripped when on the point of shooting. Tho final result Was as follows: Canterbury 4 goals. Otago 1 goal. On the run of tho game Otago were quite as good as Canterbury, but they had not the same opportunities for netting. For Canterbury, the Bell brothers, ShcrrifF, Soper, and Hay played well, and Snooks, in goal, was brilliant. In the Otago team Wood field, Duncan, Gun - , Leonard, and Butler were specially good. OTAGO. Tho annual match between these two representative teams was played on No. 1 ground at the Oval, commencing at 1.30 p.m. From the initial bully Otago pressed strongly, but were repulsed. The homo team keeping up tho pressure, drew first blood. Otago 1, Southland nil. Up-and-down play continued for tho remainder of the first spell. Southland played much better hockey on the resumption of. the game, and after give-and-take play equalised the score. Southland 1, Otago 1. LADIES’ MATCHES. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The sole selector (Mr J. Gray) has picked the following players to represent Otago against South Otago next Saturday. Players are asked to b© in attendance at the Carisbrook Ground on Thursday evening at 7.30 for practice and final instructions.
