“PROHIBITED IMMIGRANTS.”
VISITORS TO AMERICA. ALLEGATIONS REFUTED. (Fteow Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON. August 22. Allegation* wore made in the Daily Guardian, Sydney, that a number of Australians and New Zoalaiuieia who loft for San Francisco on the last trip of the Union Company’s liner Tahiti were prevented from landing in tho United States of America. The statement is unfounded. Some delay did occur at San Francisco, but it was only for a day or so, and no passengers were returned by tho Tahiti a s has been alleged. On July 31 last the Guardian published tho following:—“On the 11th of July 30 fsassengoi's from Australian and New Zealand ports were not allowed to land from tho Union liner Tahiti. They were classed as prohibited immigrants, and are now halfway homo again on tho liner."
The Australian Consul-General at Wellington states that the passengers were not refused admission into tho United Stales. Til r-v were merely held up fot a day or so pending the receipt of cablegrams. from Wellington and Sydney advising the immigration officials at San Francisco of the position. Not one of the passengers was returned by tho Tahiti. Only cue person was not allowed to enter the United States, and that was a man who was unable to pass tho medical examination. Ihe Guardian, remarked Mr Gunsaulus, had missed the mark.
