ABSCONDER ARRESTED
A SCHEME THAT FAILED. LEADING LABOURITE IN TROUBLE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 2i. (Received August 22, at 5.5 p.m.) How a leading Labourite, who was financially embarrassed, deserted his wife and child and pretended to commit suicide and then attempted to abscond with a married woman to Australia was related during the bankruptcy examination of William Jakeman, an ex-Labour member of the Dudley Council. Jakeman admitted borrowing £IOOO, which he lost building houses. When he was convinced of his losses he placed a quantity of clothing on the river bank at Worcester and then booked passages to Australia for himself and a woman as man and wife, but he was arrested on the evo of the steamer’s departure.—A. and N.Z.
