POSTAL CONFERENCE

REDUCED RATES TO AUSTRALIA.

STRONG PROTEST RECORDED,

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 12.

A resolution was passed during the committee stages at the Stockholm Postal Conference reducing the transit rates to Australia by 25 per cent. Mr Kay, representing Australia, emphatically protested, but he received no support. Mr W. O. Gibson (Commonwealth Postmaster-General) states that when the question comes up in open conference Mr Kay will seek the exemption of the sea routes from England to Australia. If this concession is not granted, Australia will have to consider whether she will remain in the union. Mr Gibson said that the proposal as it stands at present means that Australia will be compelled to pay a disproportionate amount on mail matter carried, involving a loss of £20,000 per annum.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
