LEGISLATURE AMENDMENT BILL.

PROGRESS AGAIN BLOCKED. LABOUR ANTAGONISTIC. (From Ode Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 12. When the Government's LegislatuTe Amendment Bill was first brought down on July 24 there were indications that it would not become law this session or at least that it would have a very stormy passage throfigh the House of Representatives. On that date the Government failed to get the Bill introduced. Tire Labour members do not like its provisions of proportional representation for the cities and preferential voting for the country. Mr Holland led off in the initial opposition to the Bill, and was followed bv member after member on the Extrerae’Left. When the dinner adjournment had arrived the Bill had not passed even its first stage. This afternoon tho adjourned debate was taken up from the stage it had reached on July 24, but the opposition to the Bill was renewed by the Labour members who are evidently out to fight it tooth and nail. This afternoon they moved an amendment of the short title, and again the dinner adjournment- blocked tho introduction. Under the circumstances it would not be sui prising if the Government eventually dropped the Bill.
