GENERAL NEWS.

The annual ball of the' combined ledges of tho M.U.1.0.0.F. was held on Thursday evening at the Art Gallery Hull. The hall decorations in red and blue streamers, varied with yellow ribbon and lantern effects, were much admired. The attendance was very large, 1/2 couples being present. The grand march, led by Prov. G.M. Bro. B. H. Rosevoaro and Mrs Roseveare, was a feature of the evening. Dancing was carried on with spirit and merriment The duties of M.O. were capably carried out by Bros. J. Wright, J. Lunam. R. Cockburn, and A. K. Knights. The music supplied by the Kapai Orchestra gavo satisfaction and contributed largely to the enjoyment of those present. A very pleasant evening was spent at the Macandrew Road School Gymnasium, when tho members of the staff were entertained by the school committee. Mr A. Paine, chairman of tho committee, had charge. Ho explained that tho object of tho social was to bring the members into closer contact.. Ho extended a welcome to the new teachers, Misses Kilgour and Hondra. Ho also conveyed to Mr L. M’Konzie (who is leaving the school) the good wishes of tho committee. A programme of games, competitions, musical items, and dances was gone through. Mr Tail received a vote of thanks for Ins exhibition 'of tricks. Mr J. Bowie, 8.A., head master, conveyed to tho committee tho thanks of the’ staff, and expressed his pleasure at being present. Mr M’Kenzie was accorded a farewell during this Vcek by the staff and tho scholars, and w 7 as the recipient of several presents. t Tho W. C.T.U. gave a concert' on Thursday evening to the inmates of Ross Home. The entertainment was organised by Mrs C. A. Hutton, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the old people. ’The president (Mrs -.-loft) occupied tho chair. Songs were rendered by Mesdames Lawn, MTxay, Marcclli, Magon, Bradley, Tornton, Messrs Campbell, Rawlinson, and M. Duncan. Mr W. Storey delighted tho audience with imitations of various animals. Mrs Atwell contributed a violin solo. Mr C. Henderson a cornet solo, Miss Lena Henderson a piano solo. Songs were rendered by Messrs Foote. Alexander, and Master Stewart Henderson, and recitations were rendered by Mrs Booth, Misses E. Campbell, Benfoll. and Phyllis Hutton and Mrs Henderson and Miss Sandson gave a duet. Mrs Beath, Miss P. Hutton, and Miss E. Phillips gave a haka, and tho accompanists were Mesdames F. Clark and Alexander and Miss Lena Henderson. Sweets and fruit were served during the evening. Tho singing of “Anld Lang Syne” brought a happy evening to a close.
