MANCHESTER UNITY.

The half-yearly Post Officers’ and Purple Degree lecture was held at the Loyal Valley Lodge Room on Monday, July 28. There was a largo attendance. This event was one which was looked forward to bv all qualified to attend. The rendering of tho ritual attached to tho various degrees by those qualified for the work was an occasion largely availed of by many to renew their acquaintance. This occasion proved pleasurable and profitable, tho various lecture masters giving good impressive renderings, bringing into prominence tho higher aims of tho order. A number of candidates presented themselves and received their various degrees. W.M. Bro. W. Palmer presided, and tho officers’ lectures were delivered by P.G. Bro. Smellie, T. Henderson, and Prov. G.M. Bro. Roseveare. The purple lecture was delivered by Bros. Lucas and A. Sligo. P.G. Bro. Longworth and P.P.GJP Bro. W. Sullivan acted as The impressive obligation was delivered by P.P.G.M. Bro. C. H. Russell. At the conclusion P.P.G.M. Bro. E. S. Clarke was welcomed, and gave an interesting address reviewing the progress of ritual work, and hcartilv commending the work of the evening. He considered that the lectures given as they were could not fail to effect, and he counselled close attention to their teachings. Refreshments were sup plied by the Valley Lodge, and some time was spent in the discussion of various matters. . The adjourned summoned meeting of the Loyal Centenary Lodge, held on Tuesday, July 23, was well attended. An official visit was received from the Loyal Dunedin Lodge. The balance sheet was presented showing the lodge to be in a slightly improved position. P.G. T. Froude presented P.G. Bro. Boardman with an illuminated emblematical certificate. . Bro. Froude commended the recipient for his consistent service to the lodge. Bro. Boardman suitably responded. It was decided that the lodge pay an official visit to Caversham <Sn their ;v»xt lodge night. A card match was played between the lodges present, with the result Hit C” -enary scored a win. Responses to me toast wore made by tho Loyal Hand and Heart, Albion, and Dunedin Lodges. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Kaitangata Lodge was attended by a large number of members. One candidate was initiated into the order. Invitations were received from the Loyal Dalton to their jubilee social and from the Loyal Milton to their annual bail. A letter of recommendation was granted to G.M. Bro. C. H. Clements, who has been transferred to Wellington. Members heard with regret that Bro. Worsley was in Dunedin Hospital for treatment. The N.G. reported that arrangements had been completed for the annual ball on August 22. A discussion ensued as to whether or not more support could not bo given to the juvenile lodge, and soi-erai brethren volunteered assistance.

The fortnightly meeting of the Pioneer Juvenile Ldoge, Kaitangata, was presided over by N.G. Bro. A. Ratcliffe, there being a good attendance. One proposal for membership was received. It was decided to invite a Rugby football team from Milton to play the local lodge on a convenient Saturday. It was also decided to hold a parents’ evening at an early date. Discussion took place as to the best method of spending the evening at lodge meetings, and a view was exnressed that some educational work could be carried on A programme of amusements for future evenings was arranged. The Loyal Valley Lodge met in the Albany Street Hall on Monday, July 28. There was a largo attendance of. members and visitors. The half-yearly balance sheet was read and discussed. The Mangemenfc Fund was shown to be in a healthy condition. The sick and funeral fund operations were satisfactory, and showed an increase. Three new members were proposed. An old and esteemed P.P.G.M., Bro. B. S. Clarke,, was heartily welcomed. Bro.' Clarke gave some description of his travels and his meetings of the brethren of the order in Australia. Amongst them were several ex-New Zealanders who sent their fraternal greetings. Responses were made to the toasts by Loyals Hand and Heart, Mosgiel, Centenary, Dunedin, and Caver sham Lodges, The Loyal Albion Lodge met on Thursday, July " 24, P.G. Bro. Kennedy presiding. The half-yearly balance sheet was toad,-and after discussion was adopted. A special welcome was accorded to Bro. Watt, of the Loyal Palmerston Lodge, who had just recovered from a severe operation. Bro. Watt, in responding, said that he had been cheered by the 'attention given him by members. The various juvenile lodges wore then welcomed and a musical entertainment was entered upon. Songs were contributed by Bros. Freeman Isaacs, a piano and flute duet by P.G. and G.S. Bros. Clarke, a gramophone selection by Bro. Kennedy, a piano solo by Bro. Harvey, and recitations by Bros. Haden, Lucas, Sams, Hardman, Rogers, and Stabb, while Bros. Crawford and Robson contributed humorous stories. At intervals chorus singing was indulged in, the boys showing to special advantage. The proceedings were merrily carried out, and the function was a great success. Loyal Milton Lodge was attended by 40 members, Bro. A. W. Halton presiding. The half-yearly balance sheet was presented, and after discussion was adopted. An increase of £4OO in the lodge funds was shown, and all the accounts were favourable. Sympathy was expressed with Bro. Rowley in his severe illness. One new member was initiated, and two more proposed. The juvenile lodge was then entertained, and an enjoyable programme was carried out. A plentiful supper was provided At the conclusion the adult lodge was thanked for its hospitality. Loyal Caversham met at its lodge room, Forbury Comer, on July 23. Two new members were initiated. A lengthy discussion took place on matters affecting a district social fund, and it was decided that the lodge take no action in fhe meantime. A lengthy report was made on side members. A card match was then plaved with the Centenary Lodge, the Caversham Lodge proving the winners. The consideration of the balance sheet was adjourned until next lodge night . ~ Loyal Roxburgh Lodge meeting was well attended. One member was initiated. A new conductor was appointed in the person of a junior member, who made quite a feature of the delivery of his charges. P.G. T. Waighth materially assisted in the ceremony It was decided to insert P.G. Bro. E- A. Hart’s photo in the next Handbook. It was decided that the next lodge night would take the form of a mock mayoral election, and P.G. Bro. R. George S. Waighth were chosen as the candidates. It was decided to invite the local Foresters’ Lodge to be present on the occasion. Loyal Mosgiel Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday, July 22. Bro. W. Craig presiding. One new member was initiated. The half-yearly balance sheet was presented and discussed. The funds were shown to be in a satisfactory position. It was decided to insert G.M. Bro. J. V. Togo's photo in the Handbook. Prov. Treasurer Bro. A. Sligo and P.P.G.M. Bro. J. A. Robson opened a discussion on the matter of alterations to the lodgeroom. Correspondence was received and caused some discussion. Finally i it was decided that a deputation bo appointed to wait on the District Executive in the matter. _ The visiting officers were thanked for their_ attendance, and responded in appropriate speeches. They congratulated the lodge on its working, and specially commended the work of the junior officers in the chairs.
