Bowden (Minister of Defence) conferred with the Director of Shipbuilding and the chairman of the Commonwealth Shipping Board, in regard to the construction of ono of the two new cruisers at Cockatoo. Tile conference was held in camera in Melbourne. As an alternative to building one cruiser at Cockatoo, the Government is considering a proposal to build both cruisers m .England and with the money saved to proceed with the construction of a great naval floating dock at Cockatoo, making Australia a potential base for the carpi tat ships of the British navy in war lime. It is considered likely that New Zealand would co-operate in the construction of the dock arid also contribute a share of the cost.
