WAGES OF NATIVE LABOURERS.
STATEMENT BY MR BRUCE,

Mr Bruce, in the House of Representatives, said that the Chinese labourers at Nauru were paid 22s a month, but in addition there was a bonus of 4s a month and free food, housing, and clothes. The coolies and kanakas worked 54 hours a week, the Chinese mechanics 495, and tho Europeans 47. The total population consisted of 603 Chinese, 1179 Nauruans, 110 whites, and one Chinese woman. The annual salaries amounted to £3500.
