ACCIDENT INSURANCE.
A STATE MONOPOLY. , , FAVOURED BY LABOUR COUNCIL (Pes United P.eess Association.) WELLINGTON, June 17. The President of the' Trades and Labour Council (Mr J. Read) stated to-day that the members of the council uusmimoudly favoured the Slate monopoly of 1 the workers' accident insurance. Under . A State monopoly there was no doubt that cheaper premiums would rule, owing to'the fact that there i would be less overhead charges than under the present system, : when private companies were competing for trade. It Was also held that the trouble which sometimes arose at present with regard to workers securing compensation would not be so likely to arise if the State' had a monopoly of the business. It had been unanimously agreed by the council that the general question of the Compensation for Accidents Act should be referred to the Parliamentary Committee of the Trade Councils’ Federation, and that committee would go into the whole matter.
