CAPTURED MISSIONARIES
AMERICAN PRISONER ESCAPES. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. HONG KONG, June 10. (Received .Tunc 17, at 9.20 p.m.) One o£ the kidnapped missionaries, the Rev. Mr Bay, an American, escaped from the hands of the bandits during an unguarded moment while a heavy hailstorm swept the mountains. After travelling all night he reached Chiu-Ping, whence a Chinese gunboat, which had been despatched to assist the escape of the missionaries, brought him to Wu-Chow. The Rev. E. H. Came (Australia) is still a captive, having refused an attempt to escape. The bandits now demand £3OOO for his release. —X. and N.Z. Cable.
