Mr Bay, an American, escaped from the hands of the bandits during an unguarded moment while a heavy hailstorm swept the mountains. After travelling all night he reached Chiu-Ping, whence a Chinese gunboat, which had been despatched to assist the escape of the missionaries, brought him to Wu-Chow. The Rev. E. H.
