The Otago Education Board notifies that Mr George E. Dewar has been appointed sole teacher at Lower Harbour. His Honor Mr Justice Sim will leave this morning for Christchurch, where he will preside over the sittings of the Supreme Court. The death occurred at Christchurch on Sunday of Mr John Corbett, aged 61 years. Mr' Corbett was well known throughout the dominion, and was for many years in the employ of Messrs A. and T. Burt (Ltd.), being manager of the Christchurch branch until recently. He is survived by a widow, two sons, and a daughter. At tbe meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce last evening tile president referred to the fact that Mr Justice Sim had been knighted since the last meeting. Mr Justice Sim was not a member of the chamber, but he was a respected citizen, who was held in very high honour in. the community. On the motion of the president it was unanimously decided to forward a letter of congratulation to Sir William Sim and Lady Sim. Before proceeding with the business at the meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce last evening the president (Mr Peter Barr) stated that since the last meeting their very old and esteemed friend, Mr David Crawford, had passed away. Mr Crawford was a member of the chamber for a considerable number of years, and was its honorary auditor for six or seven years. On the death of Mr John Davie, the only auditor up till that time, Mr Crawford cheerfully volunteered to take up the duties in an honorary capacity, and although he was a member of the chamber he would not allow it to make his membership honorary. Mr Crawford was held in the highest esteem, and was a man who inspired affection in the minds of those who knew him best. Those who knew him best loved him most. His death was deeply deplored by all. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to record on the minutes a motion expressing deep regret at Mr Crawford’s death. A wide circle of Dunedin people, and par. ticularly those associated with Hanover Street Baptist Church, will learn with keen regret that Mrs Alfred North passed away somewhat suddenly at the residence of her son, Dr Charles North, yesterday afternoon. The late Mrs North was the wife of the Rev. Alfred North, who was minister at Hanover Street Church from 1883 to 1900. She was his constant helper and companion, and took a very living interest in all the work of the congregation. She was secretary of the Hanover Street branch of the Baptist Missionary Society, conducted a Young "Women’s Bible Class, and actively helped the work of the Sunday School. She was greatly given to hospitality, and 'with her gracious and kindly ways made the manse a very attractive place. Her influence, among the young women of the congregation particularly, was most helpful, and she leaves a very fragrant memory ter all who knew her. In 1960 her husband and she went to Calcutta, where their eon, Dr Charles North, was at that time a missionary, and on their return to New Zealand a few years later Mr North was Baptist minister at Pnnsonby until hie retirement. The family consists of three sons and a daughter—Mr A’fred North, of the National Loan and Mercantile Company, Wellington: Dr Charles North, of Dunedin; the Rev. J. J. North, of Christchurch ; Mrs Doust, whose husband is a draper in Wanganui.
