GIRL BUS CONDUCTOR.

A LICENSE' REFUSED. COMMENT BY COUNCILLORS. (Fnon Oun Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, June 13. An application was recently made to the Auckland City, Council by Miss A. W. Russell for a license to follow the calling of a motor bus conductor. The repot t as to character and fitness for such a license as is customarily called for by the council was favourable, and the council was informed that the application was from a female person. The application, however, was declined at a meeting of the council. Last evening a further letter was received from MUs Russell renewing her application for a conductor’s license, and asking, in the, event of tliis not being granted, to be supplied with substantial grounds for the couneirs refusal. . . The Deputy-Mayor (Mr G. Baiklon) moved that the request: be referred to the Finance and Legal CommitiPQ. The chariman of the committee (Mr J. Robertson) pointed out that the committee had already con-fidercd the application. However, if the council desired the committee to give its reasons for its refusal it would do so. It had been stated that the committee was depriving this young woman, of her livelihood, but she _ was already a tenchei —a much belter position. Mr M. J. Bennett, after learning (hat no new facts about the case hud been brought up, moved as an amendment that the original decision be adhered to. This was seconded by Mr C. G. Maclndoe, who said that, far from the applicant being deprived of her she was seeking to deprive some man of his position. There was surely some other occupation with more dignity and grace open to her. The amendment was carried, the original decision of the council, therefore, being upheld.
