At the monthly meeting of the Cavcrsham School Committee. Mr D. M'Pherson presided. Tho headmaster reported that tho roll number was 655. and a good attendance was being maintained. ' The visiting committee reported having visited tho school and found everything ' satisfactory. During the holidays the school buildings had been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. The new school ground was being put in order for the school football teams. In this connection it was decided to write and thank (he Rugby Union for the loan of goal posts. It was agreed to take no action against the owners of any horses found straying on tho ground Mr \V. B. M'Ewan read before a large audience in the Oddfellows' Mall. Roslyn. on Wednesday evening a paper on “Edinburgh and Edinburgh Mon.” The occasion was the annual “Scotch Night” under the auspices of Linden Lodge. 1.0.0. E., and marked the fifth consecutive annual address on a Scottish subject given to the lodge members and their friends by Mr M‘Ewan, who was introduced by Bro. W. Smith, acting N.G. In an all toe brief recital, which was appropriatelv illustrated by a large number of excellent lantern slides, the lecturer described the principal features of modern Edinburgh, and contrasted tho singular beauty and charm of tho Scottish capital as scon to-day with the rugged features of “Auld Reekie” of bygone days. The contrast revealed a useful lesson in municipal enterprise assisted by loyal citizenship. The lecturer’s rapid review of eminent Edinburgh men in the fields of literature, science, education, and other spheres of learning provided a striking narrative, and as familiar faces were faithfully screened tho narrator’s enthusiasm became infections. By common consent the “Scottish Night” was voted n pronounced success. During the evening a short programme of Scotch songs was very capably rendered by the following:—Mrs Matkay, Miss Boyle, Messrs Bert Rawlinson. James Paterson, and W. M. MacDonald, the latter also supplying tho accompaniments. Messrs M'Ewan, Simpson. and (.ho several vocalists were accorded •i heartv vote of (hanks. The first “Ladies’ Night’’ in connection with the Sava< r n Club took place in the E-m-Iv Settlers Hall on Wednesday lost.
