WOOL AND COTTON
NEED TOR RESEARCH WORK. TEXTILE CONFERENCE AT WEMBLEY. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 11. (Received June 12, at 3.5 p.m.) The textile conference considered papers advocating, improved research work in connection with both the wool and cotton industries. Mr Crompton (Manchester) referred to the development of cross-breeding in sheep, aiming at procuring more meat but entailing the production of inferior wool. Fortunately Yorkshire’s research' efforts had resulted in the discovery of improved plant and methods of dealing with crossbred wools. He suggested that in view of the world’s reduced production of cotton consequent on the high prices it should be possible to procure artificial silk as cheaply as cotton. One speaker declared that the violent fluctuations in the textile trades were due to dependence' upon the fashions. Both men and women, particularly women, were wearing less clothing than in the past. He believed that th 6 movement in favour of wearing less and lighter clothing would continue.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
