INCREASED GERMAN SHIPPING. Germany’s merchant fleet, severely reduced by the Treaty of Versailles, is being rapidly rebuilt and it has already made such great strides toward its complete restoration, that it will not bo long before it is in a position to work again as a competitor of the British and other mercantile marines. In 3914, the German mercantile marine represented 5,100,000 tons (sailing ships and steamers). The seizures during wartime reduced it to 2,900,000' tons, and in 1919, bv application of the Treaty of Versailles, it was further considerably reduced to 450,000 ton®. But in 1923 we find it already restored to the extent of 2,800 000 tons, inferior by 700,000 tons only to the French tonnage.
