CLASSIFYING SHIPS
LONDON, May 28. Tho Australian Press Association learns that Australian steamship lines have been negotiating for some months with the Institute of Underwriters with a view to the restoration of the classification of ships, which prevailed for some years, but was altered by the underwriters last year, making a differentiation Detween established lines. The shipowners desire to return to the old arrangement, which gave practically a flat rate for all lines regularly engaged in tho homeward trade. Some difference appears to exist between the Australian and London insurance committees on this subject. The state of affairs is causing so much inconvenience to the shipping trade that the owners have addressed a formal communication to tho London Institute of Underwriters asking for a final decision, in accordance with which' the owners will decide upon a course of action.
