THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

REMARKABLE DENVELOPMENT. PRIME MINISTER’S OPTIMISM. (From Our Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, Juno 11. “One of the most wonderful things that lias happened durine the last two years,” said the Prime Minister at the openin'' of the Winter Exhibition yesterday, “is the development of New Zealand’s dairy industry. To me, knowing the country as I do, it is little short of marvellous.” Mr Massey proceeded to quote figures in support of his statement. For the 12 months ended on April 30, he said, there had been an increase in the value of dairy produce as compared with (ho previous 12 months to the extent of £2,532,854. A Voice: “And yet everybody is hard up.” Mr Massey said that there w>as nobody hard up in New Zealand. No other country in tlie world, he added, was doing so well. We had got over the slump-and onr return to prosperity was very largely due to the work- of the dairy farmers, to the men and the women who were not limiting their work to working six or eight hours a day on four or five days of the week, but who worked for 12 or more hours a dav on seven days of the week. If such people were making good incomes he would say good luck to them, for they deserved it. As regards the future o' the dairy industry, Mr Massey said that some people considered that, the passing of (he Dairy Industry Control Act of last year was socialistic. It was not socialistic but co-opera-tive. Co operative production and co-opera-tive marketing and the establishment of a Meat Control Board had been a tremendous s'-coess. In freights alone the board Ind saved the country over £1,000,000 per annum, and it had not finished yot. If the Dairy Produce Control Board proved equally successful everybody would bo satisfied.
