OTAGO ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society mot in the society’s rooms last evening, the following being present; Messrs R. Conn (chairman), R. Rutherford, A. Cowie, H. G. Williams, W. G. Reict, B. I'. Aburn, H. T. King, C. A. Wilson. T. I.ong, G. Howes, E. C- Holmes, and J. Hungeriord, The Angling Committee recommended that nothing be done in the matter of the .Southland Society's letter regarding Urn cost of fish ladders at Mataura. Mr W. G. Hay (solicitor) reported on a recent court case at Mosgiol regarding poaenmg, and asked for instructions. The committee recommended that Mr Hay be informed that the society would fall in with the suggestions made, provided all expenses were paid by the parents. The secretary of the Wyndham Anglers’ Club had advised that IdUO eels had been taken in its ecling competition. The committee recommended that a modal valued at £2 2s be sent to the society. 'The committee recommended that 50 or more perch be sent to the Grey District Society. Mr R. Cookburn (Roxburgh) had written regarding the erection of a hut at the top end of Manorburn Dam. The committee recommended that ho be in formed that the Alexandra Anglers’ Society was making inquiries as to the cost of a hut. The committee recommended that in

future no two-year-old lish be sent out from the hatchery, but that the society put out more yearlings.—Adopted. The Game Committee reported that a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs intimated that Mr Moorhouso intended visiting places in the district where Paradise duck and pukeko were to be found, and he would report on same to the Minister. The department advised that a fresh warrant to kill doer in the district would be issued shortly. The department enclosed warrants fixing an open season for deer in the district. The department enclosed an extract from the New Zealand Gazette containing an Ordor-in-Council making regulations under the Animals’ Protection and Game Act, 1921-22. Mr D. Urqnharl, Hawea Flat, had written stating that he had taken delivery of 407 deer lips from Mr J. Buckley, and further advised that ho was sending three bundles of deerskins. Hodgkinsou, Haweu Flat, had written offering to shoot ICOO deer in cither tho Hunter or Makarora Valleys, or both, on certain conditions The committee recommended that the matter be left over pending a report from members ot the council, who were going stalking, as to the number of deer. The secretary ol tho Buller Society had advised that 23 mallard dut k had arrived, and were doing well. Photographs ot deer heads obtained in Hunter Valley had been received from Mr C. E. Lucas, Horsham, England. Terrell's Aquatic Farm, Oshkosh, U.8.A., advised that they were forwarding the remainder of the society's order of wild rice seed, and also a few Wapato duck potato tubers. The town clerk, Auckland, wrote thanking the society for its gift ol Paradise ducK. r i he director, Zoological Gardens. Alelbourne, wrote thanking the society for its gift of Paradise ducks. 'lhe committee recommended that one pair of the Australian black duck which the society was to receive in exchange be sent to the Botanic Gardens, and the remainder to Lake Hawea, f lhe committee recommended that tho request from Air C. C. Gapell, Balclutha, for some qquil for liberation be noted in tho meantime. A suggestion that the society consider bringing out from England a bird named the fly catcher was received from Air, 1. Wilson, Queenstown. —Adopted.

Ayson, wrote stating that as the question ot netting at the mouth, and also in the fidewaj. of the Molyneux Rrior for quinnat salmon lor market came up last season, and a promise was given that an inspection would be made to ascertain if it was advisable and practicable to net these salmon in quantities for piarket. Ho was sending his assistant and an inspector to make the inspection, and to report to him. As the quinnat salmon ran up all the larger rivers on the east coast every season in very large numbers, it w«s considered that the time had come when large quantities should be taken for market, and, as sea fishermen had not been able 'to get them at ' sea. the question of taking them in rivers which were tidal had to be considered! The ranger (Mr E. Duncan) reported that ho bad made a tour witb the Atarine Department officials, and that they were going to recommend that netting for quinnat salmon be allowed for approximately one and a-half miles of the Clutha River. The netting for quinnat salmon would not do any harm if they bad a guarantee that no trout would' bo taken.— Received.

A letter was reconed from Messrs Waters, Ritchie, and Co.. Dunedin, stating thav they had forwarded 60 door skins to London aa requested by the society. They had asked Iheir agents to advise regarding the value of the skins, and hoped tnat the prices would result in a larger consignment being sent nekt time. T

Messrs Mason and Wales (arcnilcctsl wrote slating that ihe fish hatcheries at Clinton had been visited, and they could report that tho contractor was making good progress with (he building. The roof was complete and tho greater portion of the inferior was lined. Tho drums and septic tanks were in position, and they believed the work would be completed in about six weeks.—Received.
