The mother of Franz Murn, 21, a handsome Bavarian peasant, implored him to improve the family’s fortunes by marrying a rich widow named- Pauline Berndt, aged 60, and the owner of a large farm, wdio was infatuated with Iranz. The latter reluctantly yielded, and went to the church on the wedding day. When he saw the ugly widow hobbling up the aisle he was overcome by revulsion, and went mad. He drew a dagger and cut off his mother’s nose. The bride fled. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
