(Pkb United Pre*w Association.) AUCKLAND, December 11. At the annual meeting of the Stock Exchange. Mr ft.' C. Creagh (chairman) said that the year had been very satisfactory, both to brokers and the public, and was evidence of there being ample money in the dominion. The issues of shares had been taken up freely, justifying them in looking forward with hopefulness and _ confidence. Mr Creagh was ro-cleoted chairman. In the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Stringer, a soldier settler named George Edward MTSvoy claimed from the Crown £2OO on an agreement alleged to have been made with the Crown Land Commissioner whereby it was stated that plaintiff, after being incapacitated through illness, surrendered his farm to the Grown on the understanding that he was to get £3OO. Plaintiff had received an advance of £6OO from the Government, and had put about £I7OO of bis own money into the farm. His counsel stated that the stock on the farm was valued by the department at about £llsO, and was sold by the department for between _ £250 and £3OO. The Crown denied that the alleged agreement had been made, and said that the Commissioner Had no authority to make such an agreement. The judge, in nonsuiting the plaintiff, said it would be a remarkable thing if the Commissioner had authority to make such an agreement. His Honor’s experience was that the Commissioner had shown every solicitude for returned soldiers, and had endeavoured to help them in every way possible. The Takapuna ratepayers carried loan proposals as follows:—Sewerage, £106,000; street works, £75,000; waterworks, £25,000; fire fighting appliances, £2500; park, £2200: total £210,700- There was a very small poll. WHAKATANE, December 11. William Wright, aged 35, single, was charged in the' Police Court with converting a mare, saddle, and bridle to his own use, and there were three other charges of theft from settlers. He pleaded guilty, and whs sentenced to one month, with 12 months’ reformative treatment. Wright was further charged that on December 1, at Waimana, he did wound a mare, the property of Adam To Whotu, by means of a. corrosive chemical substance. On the application of the police the case was adjourned for a week. WELLINGTON, December 11, _ Mr F. Langston, Labour M.P. for Wairaarino, addressed a meeting af Carterton last night, and condemned the Government’s policy all through. He advocated the abolition of the freehold and leasehold land tenure and the substituting of security of tenure, so that once on the land no man could bo put off it. He objected to the extravagant methods of the Government in raising loans in London, and urged the establishment of a State Bank. He advocated proportional representation and condemned the expend!*”re n f £500,000 on the Singapore base, ruling the amount as better spent on the propaganda of peaceful ideals.
