REINSTATEMENT WANTED. A CANDID CARDINAL. LONDON, November 24. “Many English people are beginning to think that Britain made a mistake three hundred years ago in not holding on to the Pope,” said Cardinal Bourne, addressing the annual conference of the Catholic Evidence build. “We members of the guild are out to reinstate the Pope. We want him to be the spiritual and ethical leader of Britain, and we ire not hiding that tact at all. The first thing we nave to do’ to bring this about is to let people know about the Pope; for if we can only get the people of Britain to know about the Pope, and submit themselves to him, all the other difficulties we talk about will vanish. “If we only succeed in getting the Pope reinstated in the hearts of English people, we shall have our heart’s desire. The signs of the times are all pointing in that direction. Notice how anxious people are now, not merely to respect the Pope, but to have the lead from him, as in matters concerning the late war. “Lord Birkenhead, when speaking at Glasgow recently, referred to the Pope as ‘the greatest priest in the world, enthroned in his Roman palace.’ “If we put our souls into the Catholic Evidence Guild, the spirit now spreading throughout England will have a wonderful effect in bringing the Catholic faith hack to Britain.” ■" -"J"
