Bush fires raged around Tuatapere and it is due to the almost superhuman efforts of the fire fighters, who fought day and night, that any timber yards, dwellings, or places of business stand to-day. The fires were the most severe since the disastrous fire of 1916. Hamilton and Co. and the .Southland Sawmilling Company suffered heavily in tramways, especially the latter, •who nave been compelled to wagon the timber pending the re-laying of about 40 chains of damaged tramways. Mr D. Galt, of Papatotara, had his sawmilling plant, burned to the ground, and Young's sawmill at Orawia (near Tuatapere) is closed down owing to the shortage of water. BLAZE IN AUCKLAND. Fire destroyed four two-storey wooden shops in Mount Eden road occupied by Messrs Jolly and Co., second-hand dealers and land agents, Mr Vincent, stationer and bookseller, Mr Thompson, confectioner, and Mr Rutherford, bootmaker. No details as to-the insurance is available. Nothing was saved. LOCAL OUTBREAKS. The City Fire Brigade was called out at a quarter to 1 yesterday morning to 12 Frendergast street, South Dunedin, where fire had broken out in a four-roomed wooden house. One room was slightly damaged before the outbreak was extinguished. OUTBREAK IN MORAY PLACE. Another fire broke out at 5.25 in the afternoon in a joinery factory at 181 Moray place, owned by Mr C. Thomson, and occupied by Messrs Silver and Dempster. The outbreak was promptly extinguished by the City Fire Brigade, though not before the floor was badly charred and the contents slightly damaged. The building is insured in the Standard Office, but the amount, was not available last night, and the stock and plant, which are valued at £7OO, are insured in the South British Office for £350.
