Ministerial. The Hon. J. O. Coates arrived in Groymouth on Wednesday evening, after receiving man;,' deputaicii* en i onto from Otira (says a Press Association telegram). Ho icceived Grey deputations yesterday, and visited Banytown and Punakaiki. The Hon. A. F. Hawke, M.L.C. (Invercargill), is at present visiting Dunedin. Mr F. Ferriman, of Ashburton, was a passenger from the north yesterday. Mr J. Ironside has been appointed organising teacher of primary schools in the Otago district Mr R. H. Watson left by the express yesterday for Oaniaru on trade union business. Mr J. D. Ritchie, land purchaser controller, left for the north by the express yesterday. Mr George Black returned to the city by the express yesterday, after a visit to Great Britain. The Christchurch Presbytery has sustained the call of the Leeston charge to Mr W. 11. P. M’Kenzie, licentiate of the’ Dunedin Presbytery. His ordination and induction have been fixed for November 15. Colonel W. B. Brittain, from Sheffield, who has come to New Bealand with the intention of settling in this dominion, is at present visiting Dunedin. Dr P. Ardagh, D. 5.0., has accepted appointment to the Christchurch War Pensions Board (says a Press Association telegram . Dr K. M’Cormick, D. 5.0., has accepted a similar appointment in Auckland. The Victoria League Conference will be opened by his Excellency the GovernorGeneral at the Pioneer Club, Wellington, on Tuesday afternoon next. Mrs Sim (president of the local branch) and Miss E. Jackson (secretary) -will leave to-morrow morning to attend the conference. Mr Harry Cowdery has relinquished the postion of manager at the Savoy and will at an early date resume the position of supervisor of the Government railway refreshment dining rooms in the North Island, with headquarters at Marton. Mr J. R. Simpson, manager of the Invercargill branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, who is on holiday leave, has arrived in Dunedin after a visit to the West Coast. He will leave for Invercargill to-morrow. The Hon. G. M. Thomson, M.L.C.. was a passenger by the express yesterday for Clrristchutoh to meet Professor Cossar Ewart, who holds the chair of zoology in Edinburgh University. Professor Ewart was responsible for the shipment of tire first herring ova into the dominion and is a recognised authority on several branches of science A pleasant function took place at the New Zealand Refrigerating Co.’s Burnside office yesterday, when Miss G. D. Munro, who is leaving after several years’ service, was presented with a solid silver toilet set, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Mr J. Banber (manager) expressed the good wishes of the staff - for her "future happiness. The recipient suitably responded Miss Munro left by the second express yesterday for Hastings, where she intends to make her future home. By the death of Mr John Lindsay, at Invercargill, last Sunday, Otautau lost one of its old and respected pioneer residents. Born in Glasgow in 1850, the late Mr Lindsay, a? a boy of 11 years, came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Jura. The family at first settled at Waikouaiti, remaining there for several years. In 1879 Mr Lindsay married Miss Barbara M'Coll, a daughter of one of the Shag Valley settlers, and threp years later the younp couple went Mo Otautau, taking up the “Strathmore” selection, where they remained throughout life. Mrs Lin&ay predeceased her husband in 1918. The Tate Mr Lindsay, who had been ailing for some time, was removed a few months ago to the Park Hospital, Invercargill. He had, been closely identified with the district for over 40 vears, and was highly respected. During that time he was actively associated with many local bodies, the Wallace A. and P. Association, the Otautau Dairy Factory, and the Oddfellows’ Lodge amongst others, and was a member and office-bearer of the Presbyterian Church. The interment took place in the Otautau new cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral being one of the largest known there. The late Mr Lindsay left a family of three sons and four daughters.
