Writing on 21st September, 1923. the London correspondent of the Otago Daily Times reports, inter alia : A somewhat disturbing letter byMr Otto Hehnor was published in the London Times yesterday. This calls attention to the- cumulative effect on the human system of minute quanfjties of insidious poisons or ■ physiologically active substances used as preservatives in foods and cheap drinks. For instance, cheap, artificial, temperance beverages contain salicylic or benzoic acid or sulphur dioxide. Seven grains to the pint are required for effective preservatisation. For the last 50 years Thomsons have been drawing the attention of the public to these injurious adulterations through the columns of this paper.
