Cable. ELLIS ISLAND IMPROVEMENTS, The following message from New York appeared in the London Daily Telegraph o! September 16: Mr Wadsworth, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury will recommend Mr Melton to ask Congress to increase, the appropriation for the Ellis Island immigration slauon, in order that the buildings may be enlarged. He will also suggest doing away with some of the present red tape in the handling of immigrants. Mr Wadsworth made this announcement after making an official visit of investigation to the immigration station as a result, it is understood, of the recent criticisms made by Sir Auckland Geddes. Mr Wadsworth was accompanied by representatives of the Federal Departments of Health, and Labour. He declared that he found the administration of the island efficient, and said that tiie present staff would be large enough with improved facilities. Immigrants, he considered, should be examined in Europe, and not permitted to embark until they had convinced the examiners that they would be able to secure admission to the United States. Mr Henning, the Assistant Secretary of Labour, one of those who accompanied Mr Wadsworth on his inspection, expressed the opinion that a greatly increased staff would be necessary in order to secure the efficient '•vorkinn- of the station. Ho added that, he was ashamed of the low salaries paid to tho workers there, and said that, in order to raise funds to increase their salaries, he would '-also 'he head ‘-v payable by immigrants from Bdol to 25d01.
