AMERICAN RAILWAYS

LESSONS FOR AUSTRALIA. Proas Association—Br Veletrraph-Copyright NEW YORK, October 30. The Australian Press Asssociation interviewed Mr T. E. Day, Surveyor-general, who is visiting America in regard to South Australian railways. He said that he was conducting investigations in regard to the largest American railway systems for the purpose of applying the lessons learned to Australia. He had secured bids for 1200 gondola and box cars and wrecking cranes, which he would compare with the bids received for similar products in England. Mr Day said he was favourably impressed with the administration of the trunk lines in America, and the magnitude and efficiency of the management of traffic, refreshment, and sleeping cars, and mails. He had investigated various new devices, such as a rail-loader for loading and unloading rails, and a machine for pressing out cold steel plates for trucks. He found that one important railway used lignite coal with great success for locomotive firing, and he had secured complete data for the purpose of examining the possibilities of application in Australia, where it would result in a monumental saving. Mr Day sales for England in December.
