A BRUTAL ASSAULT.
“FREE LABOUR” FIREMAN ATTACKED. FACE BADLY CUT. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 2. D. W. M’Kenzie, a free labour fireman on tho Marama, was found last night lying in a pool of blood in the firemen’s quarters on the ship, his face being badly cut about, supposedly by a bottle. The men were paid yesterday, and most were ashore a good deal of the time. No one saw what happened, but it is believed that M’Kenzie was assaulted in his bunk during the day, and dragged to the corner where he was found. The blood on the floor appeared several hours old. It is said that there has been a good deal of trouble between unionists and “free” men.
