BOXING AND WRESTLING.

TOURNAMENT AT KING’S THEATRE. A boxing and wrestling tournament, was liel t ] in the King's Theatre last night under the auspices of the Dunedin Combined Sports Club. There was a jjood attendanoa ot the public. WALKER v. COUGHLAN. Tile proceeding:- opened with a wrestling contest between T. Walker (10.7), professional light-weight, champion of New Zealand, and M. Cottghlan (12.7). The contest was of three round?, each round of five minutes, but a fall to end the round. Mr VI. Goughian was the referee. In the flrsr round, after finessing for a hold for a few seconds, Goughian closed on liis opponent and brought him to the floor with a beautiful cross buttock, and secured the fall. The second round went (lie full five minutes, and some strenuous work took place on the mat. no fall bein-r registered. In (he final round Walker, after getting out of trouble with a head spin, secured a neck and toe hold at the end ot four and a-half minutes, levered Goughian, over, and won the fall. The match ended in a draw. Goughian broke a finger in the second round. Mr H. L, Humphreys was the judge in the boxing contests, and Messrs J. Stewart and D. M. Paterson the judges, and Messrs J. W. Ledgerwood and W. M’Kewen timekeepers. The contests were of six two. minute rounds. BANTAM-WEIGHTS. J. Wilson 6.2 beat C. Lee 8.4. Some vigorous rallies took place in the first three rounds. Lee was the stronger lad. and he used a good right swing -vith effect. In the fourth round, however, Wilson connected with a solid right hook to the jaw, and won (his round comfortably. Wilson did most of the leading in the last two rounds and won well on points. FLY-WEIGHTS. •T. Leckie 7.8 beat. S. Campbell 7.9. Leckie. the champion fly-weight of New Zealand, quite outclassed liis opponent, who was counted out at the end of Imin 40sec. FEATHER-WEIGHTS. R. Fulcher 8.9 beat H. Kindley 8.9. A line exhibition of two-handed quick hitting and clever footwork was witnessed. Bofh men used good lefts, but Fulcher connected the oftener. In the third and fourth rounds especially some vigorous rallies took place, and in the fifth—in which close fighting took place—Kindley began to (ire. Fulcher had the better of the Hsfc round, but Kindley fought him back right through. Fulcher was inclined at times to swing in for the clinch with his shoulder. Ihe lads were loudly cheered for a game am] clever exhibition. G. Campbell S.B beat W. .T. Leckie 8.8. /there was not a great deal of science displayed by either lad in the early stages, bur. Campbell scored well with a solid left towards the end of the fight. LIGHT-WEIGHT?. T. lie,ur 9.6 beat G. Alains 9.2. 'lbis was a fight, without much boxing science, which roused the spectators to the highest state of excitement. The men stood up to each other and exchanged blow for blow practically right through the six rounds, and fought themselves to a standstill. Mains was knocked through the ropes in the sixth round, hut quickly scrambled back into the ring again. Both men took a lot of punishment. Hunt finished the fresher of the two. but even then did not have sufficient strength to deliver a. knock-out blow when he had his opponent a t his mercy. D. A. Sutherland 9.5 beat W. Pyle 10.0. Pyle put up a good shewing against hii cleverer opponent. Sutherland was tireless on attack, and at the finish was repeatedly breaking through Pyle's defence with a straight left. Pyle allowed his lighter opponent to come to him too much. He. however. did very well, and should improvg with more experience of the ring. . EX HIBITIOX B 0 UT. L ; Drew and M. M’Galluni gave arj exhibition coolest of three two-minutg rounds.
