OSTRACISED JAPANESE
BOYCOTT IN CHINA. SHANGHAI, June 15. The seriousness of the boycott of Japanese in Shanghai, and the immense losses the Japanese are suffering in consequence, have been revealed by a communication despatched by the Japanese Chamber of Commerce at Shanghai to the Government at Tokio. The communication says that the boycott is becoming worse, and is, indeed, assuming dangerous proportions, involving incalculable economic sufferings and loss to Japan. Previous boycotts, it is pointed out. were mainly student movements, but this one is conducted by the Chinese Chambers of Commerce, guilds, and other bodies, and is therefore far more effective. “It may result in sweeping away the Japanese economic edifice in China,’’ the communication states. Numerous instances are given as to how the boycott is operating. The exchanges will not quote Japanese stocks, and the Chinese refuse to transact business with Japanese or travel in or send or receive goods by Japanese steamers or use Japanese wharves. The transportation of Japanese goods has become impossible. iuc document bogs the Tokio Government to take such action as will stop or mitigate the boycott. •as a result of protests the Chinese authorities at Changsha have agreed to protect Japanese residents. Students who attempted to prevent the salving of a Japanese steamer on the Upper Yangtze River yesterday were dispersed by a force from a Japanese gunboat.
